White elephant rules for an office gift exchange

Quick answer: everyone brings one wrapped gift under a set price and draws a number. Player 1 opens a gift from the pile. Every next player either opens a new gift or steals an opened one. Anyone who loses a gift picks again. A gift is frozen after its third steal, and the game ends when the last wrapped gift is opened.

That is the whole game. Below are the rules written out step by step for a work party, the house rules most offices add, how to keep it fair for remote teammates, and what kind of gift people actually fight over.

How to play white elephant at work, step by step

  • Set a price limit and a date. Most offices pick $20 to $30 so nobody feels pressured.
  • Everyone who wants to play brings one wrapped gift with no name on it and puts it in a shared pile.
  • Players draw numbers from a hat, or use a random number picker on a phone.
  • Player 1 picks any wrapped gift and opens it so everyone can see it.
  • Player 2 chooses: open a new gift from the pile, or steal Player 1's opened gift.
  • If your gift is stolen, you immediately choose again: open a new gift or steal a different opened gift.
  • Play continues in number order until every wrapped gift is open.
  • Optional final round: Player 1, who never had a choice, may swap with any unfrozen gift at the end.

Stealing rules most offices use

Agree on these before the first gift is opened and say them out loud. Almost every white elephant argument comes from a rule nobody announced.

  • No instant steal backs. If someone steals your gift, you cannot take it straight back on the same turn.
  • Three steals and it is frozen. After a gift changes hands for the third time, it stays with its owner.
  • One steal per turn. A stolen player picks again, but the chain stops when someone opens a new gift.
  • Opened gifts stay visible. Keep them unwrapped and in view so people know what they are stealing.

Office house rules that keep it friendly

  • Keep it optional. People who do not want to play can still watch, cheer and eat the snacks.
  • Safe for work only. No alcohol unless your workplace allows it, nothing personal, nothing about a coworker.
  • Stick to the price limit in both directions. A $5 gift and a $90 gift both make the room awkward.
  • Set a time box. A group of 10 takes about 20 to 30 minutes; for 30 or more, cap steals at two or split into tables.
  • Have a spare gift or two on hand for anyone who forgot, so nobody sits out.

White elephant for remote and hybrid teams

Ship gifts to one organizer, or have everyone ship to themselves and open on camera when their gift is chosen. Share a numbered list of gifts in the chat so people can see what is available to steal.

Printed on demand gifts need production plus shipping time, so pick your date and order early. Each of our product pages shows an estimated US delivery date before you check out.

What makes a good white elephant gift at work

The gifts that get stolen are funny, useful and about something everyone in the room shares. At an office party that is work itself: meetings, job postings, the inbox. A mug with a joke about "competitive salary" lands with the intern and the director alike, and nobody feels singled out.

Mugs, desk mats, candles, ornaments and stickers fit everyone. Clothing only works if it comes in a size range and the recipient can exchange it, so keep shirts for swaps where you know the crowd.

White elephant vs Secret Santa

In Secret Santa each person is assigned one coworker to buy for, and gifts are personal. In white elephant nobody knows who gets their gift, so it should appeal to anyone, and stealing is half the fun. Some offices run both: Secret Santa for small teams, white elephant for the whole floor.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can a gift be stolen in white elephant?

Most groups freeze a gift after its third steal, so it stays with the third person who took it. Some offices use two steals to keep big games moving. Announce the limit before you start.

What is a good price limit for an office white elephant?

Between $20 and $30 is the most common range at work. It is enough for a quality mug, desk mat or candle without putting pressure on anyone.

Can you steal back a gift that was just stolen from you?

Under the usual rules, no. You must open a new gift or steal a different one, and you can steal your old gift back later only if it is still unfrozen.

What is the difference between white elephant and Yankee swap?

They are the same game under different names. Yankee swap is common in New England, and some groups also call it a Dirty Santa or a gift swap.
