How to ask for a job referral
Referrals are often the fastest way past the application pile. Most people are happy to refer someone when it is easy: a clear role, a short reason you fit, and everything they need in one message. Here is how to ask without making it awkward.
Make it easy to say yes
- Name the exact role and include the link.
- Say in one or two lines why you fit.
- Attach your resume or a short blurb they can paste into the referral form.
- Give them an easy out. People refer more when they do not feel cornered.
Template: a friend or former coworker
Hi [name]! I saw [company] is hiring a [role] ([link]) and it looks like a great fit for my experience in [skill or area]. Would you be comfortable referring me? I have attached my resume and a two line summary you can use. Totally fine if not, and thank you either way.
Template: someone you know a little
Hi [name], we met at [event] / worked together briefly on [project]. I am applying for the [role] role on your team ([link]). I have [one line of relevant experience]. If you are open to it, I would really appreciate a referral, or even a quick tip on what the team is looking for.
Template: a near stranger
Hi [name], I am applying for [role] at [company] and noticed you work on [team]. I would love to ask two quick questions about the team before I apply. Would you have 10 minutes this week? Happy to work around your schedule.
After they refer you
- Apply right away so the referral and the application line up.
- Thank them, and tell them how it goes, even if it is a no.
- Offer to return the favor when they need it.

Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to ask a stranger for a referral?
It is better to ask for a short conversation first. After a good chat, many people will offer to refer you without being asked.
Should I apply before or after asking for a referral?
Ask first if you can. Many referral systems work best when the employee submits you before you apply on your own.
What if they say no?
Thank them and move on. They may not know the team, or have a policy against it. It is not personal.
