How to follow up on a job application, with templates

A good follow up is short, specific and easy to answer. It reminds them who you are and gives them one simple question to reply to. Here is when to send one and exactly what to say.

When to send it

  • After applying: about one week after the posting closes, or ten business days after you apply.
  • After an interview: a thank you within 24 hours, then a follow up if you pass the date they gave you.
  • After a final round: wait until the date they gave, then follow up once.
  • Never more than twice for the same role.

Hi [Name],

I applied for the [Role] position on [date] and wanted to follow up. I am especially excited about [one specific thing about the team or product], and my experience with [relevant skill or result] lines up well with what you are looking for.

Is there any update on next steps? Happy to share anything else that would help.

Thanks,
[Your name]

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sending a follow up the day after applying.
  • Writing a long recap of your resume. They have it.
  • Following up on several platforms at once.
  • Guilt trips. Keep it warm and easy to answer.

Frequently asked questions

Who should I send my follow up to?

The recruiter or hiring manager if you can find them. If not, reply to the confirmation email or use the contact on the posting.

Is it OK to follow up on LinkedIn?

Yes, a short LinkedIn message works well if you cannot find an email. Pick one channel, not several.

What if they never reply?

Follow up once more after a week, then move on. Silence after two polite notes is your answer, and it says more about their process than about you.
