Ghost jobs: 9 signs a job posting is fake
A ghost job is a posting for a role the company is not actively trying to fill. Sometimes it is left up by accident, sometimes it is there to collect resumes for later, and sometimes it exists to make the company look like it is growing. Surveys of hiring managers have found a meaningful share admit to posting roles they had no immediate plan to fill. Here is how to spot them.
The warning signs
- It has been posted for 60 days or more, or keeps getting reposted with a fresh date.
- The same role shows up in the same city again and again over several months.
- The description is vague: no team, no manager, no real responsibilities, no salary range.
- The company careers page does not list it, even though the job boards do.
- Thousands of applicants and nobody you know there has heard of the opening.
- The company recently announced layoffs or a hiring freeze but the posting is still up.
- It is "evergreen": always open, for a pipeline of future roles.
- You applied, were rejected, and saw the exact same posting go back up the next day.
- Nobody ever replies, not even an automatic rejection.
How to check if a job is real
Look for the same role on the company careers page. Search the job title plus the company name on LinkedIn to find the likely hiring manager or recruiter, then send a short note asking if the role is actively hiring. A real recruiter on a real role will usually answer. You can also ask current employees whether the team is growing.
Ghost jobs are different from scams
A ghost job wastes your time. A scam wants your money or your identity. Be careful with any "employer" that asks you to pay for training or equipment, wants your bank or ID details before a real interview, interviews only by text chat, or offers a high salary for very little work. Real employers do not ask you to pay to start a job.
Spend your time where it counts
Prioritize roles posted in the last two weeks, roles where you can find a real person to contact, and companies you can confirm are hiring. Tailor those applications carefully and give ghost candidates a quick apply at most.
