Interview guide
Job interview preparation checklist
Most interview stress comes from small things: a broken link, a forgotten name, a blank moment on "Tell me about yourself." This checklist covers them so you can spend your energy on the conversation.
The week before
- Reread the job description and highlight the top five requirements.
- Write one short story for each, using situation, action and result.
- Research the company: what it sells, recent news, and who you will meet.
- Practice "Tell me about yourself" out loud until it takes about a minute.
- Prepare three questions to ask at the end.
The night before
- Confirm the time, time zone and link or address.
- Test your camera, microphone and internet, or plan your route.
- Lay out what you will wear.
- Print or save your resume and the job description.
- Go to bed. Cramming at midnight does not help.
The day of
- Eat something.
- Log in or arrive 5 to 10 minutes early.
- Have water, a notebook and your questions nearby.
- Silence your phone and close other tabs.
- Smile at the start. It sounds silly, and it works.
After the interview
- Write down what they asked and what you would answer differently.
- Send a short thank you email within 24 hours.
- Note the timeline they gave you and set a follow up reminder.
