How to write a LinkedIn post about being laid off

A good layoff post does one job: it makes it easy for people to help you. That means saying clearly what you do, what you want next, and how to reach you. It does not need to be sad, angry or overly polished. Here is a simple structure and three templates you can adapt.

What to include

  • One line on what happened. No details needed.
  • What you did and what you are proud of, in one or two specific lines.
  • The roles, industries and locations or remote setup you want next.
  • A clear ask: introductions, referrals or tips about openings.
  • How to reach you.

What to leave out

  • Criticism of your former employer or manager. Future employers will read it.
  • Severance details or anything you agreed to keep confidential.
  • A long list of everything you have ever done. Link to your profile instead.

Template: short and direct

Some personal news: my role at [company] was eliminated this week as part of a layoff.

For the last [years], I [one line on what you did and the result].

I am now looking for [role] roles in [industry or location or remote]. If you know of an opening or someone I should talk to, I would really appreciate an introduction.

Thank you to the team at [company]. It was a great run.

Template: with a little humor

Plot twist: my calendar is suddenly very open.

After [years] at [company], I was part of this week's layoff. I am proud of [specific achievement].

Next, I am looking for a [role] position where I can [what you want to do]. Referrals, introductions and "you should talk to my friend" messages are all very welcome.

Also accepting coffee invitations.

Template: for a whole team that was laid off

This week, I and several brilliant teammates were laid off from [company].

If you are hiring for [roles], please comment or message me. I would be happy to personally introduce you to people I would work with again in a heartbeat.

As for me: I am looking for [role] roles in [industry or remote].

After you post

  • Reply to every comment within a day. Comments push the post to more people.
  • Follow up on every introduction with a short note and your resume.
  • Turn on Open to Work for recruiters, and update your headline with your target title.

Frequently asked questions

Should I post on LinkedIn that I was laid off?

For most people, yes. Layoffs are common, and a clear post often brings introductions and referrals faster than applying cold.

How soon after a layoff should I post?

Once you have had a day or two to think about what you want next. A clear ask works better than a rushed post.

Is it OK to be funny in a layoff post?

A light touch is fine and often makes the post more shareable. Keep the joke about the situation, not about the company or people.
