What to do when a recruiter ghosts you
The call went well. They said they would be in touch by Friday. It is now three Fridays later. Being ghosted by a recruiter is one of the most common, and most frustrating, parts of a job search. Here is why it happens, what to send, and how to stop it from stalling your whole search.
Why recruiters go quiet
- The role was paused, cut or filled internally.
- The hiring manager has not made a decision yet and there is nothing new to say.
- The recruiter is handling dozens of open roles at once.
- You are a backup candidate while they wait on someone else.
- Rarely, it is about you. Usually it is about their process.
How long to wait
If they gave you a date, wait two business days past it. If they did not, wait about a week after an interview, or two weeks after applying. Then follow up once.
Template: first follow up
Hi [name], I hope your week is going well. I wanted to follow up on the [role] position after our conversation on [date]. I am still very interested and would love to hear about next steps or the timeline when you have a moment. Thank you, [Your name]
Template: final follow up
Hi [name], I am following up one last time on the [role] position. I understand timelines change. If the role has moved forward or is on hold, I would appreciate a quick note so I can plan, and I would be glad to be considered for future openings. Best, [Your name]
When to move on
- After two follow ups with no reply, treat it as closed in your head.
- Keep the door open: a friendly last note helps if the role reopens.
- Put that energy into new applications and conversations.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for recruiters to ghost candidates?
Unfortunately, yes. It is common, especially when a role is paused or a decision is delayed. It usually says more about the process than about you.
How many times should I follow up?
Twice is plenty: once after the expected date passes, and a final note a week or two later.
Should I call instead of emailing?
Email is usually better. It is easy to reply to and does not put the recruiter on the spot.
